Philosophical Reflections During the 2004 Elections: Essays and Letters to The New York Times, USA Today, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
David Brooks's October 23 editorial "The More Things Change..." presents a simplistic and partisan picture of the American political landscape. A campaign of "character glorification"of the incumbent President is paralleled by a "character assassination"of the challenger. This obfuscates the real issues and differences in the political positions.
The virtues of "exceptional moral qualities" and resoluteness are not a monopoly of the Republican presidency, and they should not be confused with the faith-based fundamentalism and the rush to war based on pretensions of a God-like infallibility.
For example, President John F. Kennedy's vision inspired a whole generation of Americans to serve the country and the world, and his wise use of military strength and diplomacy during the Cuban missile crisis saved America and the world from a nuclear catastrophe. Leadership in today's world requires both vision, sound judgment, and world-wide credibility. John Kerry has those qualities.
