On the Lighter Side: Cockatoo Toes

I have a seventeen year old wild caught Goffins
cockatoo that came to us three years ago this month from a small
privately owned and run parrot rescue. The name he came to us with was
Houdini but we all call him 'Dini. Well when 'Dini first came to us he
was a true headcase. He'd been abused for at least fourteen years that
we know of and was so aggressive you touched him at your own risk, (In
other words you DIDN'T touch him if you wanted to keep all your
fingers!) well over the course of the last three years he's gone from
a touch-me-not to a I-wanna-cuddle-on-your-chest-ALL-the-time-momma
bird. If he's not trying to destroy the woodwork (Goffins are little
saw mills with wings), or shred the curtains, he's chasing the puppy
or dive bombing my husband or the two boys. He runs this house with an
iron talon.
Aside from his normal cockatoo proclivities 'Dini has issues with human toes. For some unknown reason I've yet to fathom human toes are a battle cry for this bird. He sees toes and his battle orders are immediate and SCARY. Well when he first came to us he always stayed on or in his cage. So we never closed it. He was in our bedroom and didn't get into much because he wasn't sure enough of himself to be a COCKATOO. As time went by he became more and more friendly but still wasn't getting into much trouble. That all came to a shrieking (pun intended) halt one Saturday morning.
Jim (My husband) didn't have to go to work that day and we were
all sleeping in. Image my horror when I was awakened by my husbands
screams of pain. 'Dini had burrowed under the covers at the end of the
bed, found Jim's right big toe and CHOMPED the heck out of it and
wouldn't let go! A snapping turtle with wings under the covers of our
bed for crying out loud. After that we started closing 'Dini's cage at
night when we went to bed. :o)) E.A. Henson
